Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance

Saturday 3rd August

Band A £72.00pp

Band B £57.00pp

Lord of the Dance is an Irish dance show and dance production that was created, choreographed, and produced by Irish-American dancer Michael Flatley, who also took a starring role. The music for the show was written by Ronan Hardiman.

Michael Flatley found his first fame starring in Riverdance, but he left the show in late 1995 due to conflicts over creative control. He dreamed of, and put into action, a plan of putting together a dance show capable of playing in arenas and stadiums instead of traditional theatres.

The show takes place in a “Celtic” land called Planet Ireland (or it is sometimes interpreted as ancient/historical Ireland), with much Celtic-themed imagery and music. The story follows Flatley’s character, the “Lord of the Dance”, and his fight against the evil dark lord Don Dorcha from taking over Planet Ireland. The Lord of the Dance defeats the dark lord’s invasion with help from a little spirit, a pixie or faerie of sorts. This spirit, who initially appears as some kind of court jester, is eternally positive, dancing and beaming at all times. The show begins with the little spirit playing “The Lord of the Dance” melody, solo, on tin whistle, before the dark forces come and take over the Celts.

Abergavenny & Brecon

Wednesday 21st August

£25.00pp coach only

Abergavenny is the perfect base for exploring the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Blaenavon World Heritage Site. It’s surrounded by seven mountains – a bit like Rome. Its main attractions include Abergavenny Castle & Museum, St Mary’s Priory church, market hall and castle meadows. Brecon  (Aberhonddu as it is known in Welsh is a town where you’ll enjoy losing yourself…not only in the narrow streets and passageways lined with Georgian and Jacobean shopfronts, but in the sense of timelessness about the place.

‘Must See’ attractions include Brecon Cathedral, YGaer Museum, The Royal Welsh Regimental Museum and the many indepentdent shops, cafes and galleries in and around the town centre. The local Theatre Brycheiniog is found on the Brecon Canal Basin and hosts various shows and events throughout the year.

This is an historic market town in the heart of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park and the hills around Brecon boast some of the finest walking and mountaineering terrain in Britain, including Pen-y-Fan, the highest point in southern Britain at 886m.

Brecon Canal Basin

Brecon Canal Basin is at the northern extent of the navigable section of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, right in the heart of Brecon. The canal towpath offers walkers a gentle walking experience through some very pretty countryside and to enjoy the waterside wildlife. Brecon is the starting point of the Taff Trail, a 55 mile walking and cycling route that follows the Taff river right down to Cardiff.

Ancient Britons, Romans and Normans have each left their mark on Brecon. The town’s name comes from that of the old Welsh name of the kingdom – Brycheiniog’ in whose territory Brecon stands. The kingdom took its name from Prince Brychan who founded it, and who remains a colourful character in local folklore and legend. The name later became anglicised to Brecknockshire or Breconshire.
